Oct 2005:

SLD is very pleased to be granted the SMART AWARD from the Scottish Executive.

«The Scottish Executive recognises that science, engineering and technology will continue to underpin our national competitiveness. Knowledge and skills in these areas are becoming increasingly vital to Scotland as our businesses become even more dependent on high value-added and knowledge-based products, processes and services.

Innovation and R&D are inherently high-risk activities, especially when the results are several years from the marketplace. They often require considerable financial investment and enterprises typically experience difficulties raising finance to research and develop new ideas.

SMART:SCOTLAND is intended to help small businesses to improve their competitiveness by developing new, highly innovative and commercially viable products or processes to the benefit of the national economy. It is a competition open to individuals planning to start a new business and to existing small independent firms and groups with less than 50 employees. Entries will be assessed internally by the Scottish Executive and following this initial sift a diligence process will be undertaken involving a full Patent Office search, financial and technical appraisals. The Scottish Executive has established links with a broad range of Technical Experts to assist with this process.»
